Canon PIXMA MG3540 Review

Canon declares the PIXMA MG3550 can print at 9.9 ppm for black and 5.7 ppm for colour. These are quite modest specifications and, under test, we got reasonably close to the very first of them. The 5-page black text document offered 7.7 ppm, while the longer, 20-page variation, increased this to 8.1 ppm. The five-page black text and colour graphics test returned 1.9 ppm, however, which is extremely sluggish and the duplex document– duplex print is basic– was likewise slow, at a mere 2.2 ppm.

A single-page colour copy took 33s and 15 x 10cm pictures took 1:09 from a PC and 1:33 printing wirelessly from a Samsung Galaxy SIII Android phone. We at first had trouble printing from Canon’s Easy Image Print app, which refused to discover the printer, but in the end it clicked into place.

Canon PIXMA MG3550– Print Quality and Expenses
Print quality, even for such an economical printer, is great. Black text is crisp and dense and colours in organisation graphics are remarkably intense, though in a plain paper copy they looked a little muddy. Photos were every well recreated, with lots of detail and accurate colours, throughout.

The LED-illuminated, Contact Image Sensing Unit (CIS) flatbed scanner is rated at 4,800 x 1,200 ppi boosted and offered excellent clear scans of text and image-based product. The trend in consumable costs has been towards smaller sized differences between single cartridge rates and multi-cartridge packs, however here it’s worth purchasing the twin-pack, as you gain a number of pounds each time.

Using the XL variations of the cartridges, which provide much better worth than the standard ones, provides page expenses of 3.6 p for black and 7.7 p for colour. These are reasonable worths for this class of machine– you always pay a bit more for consumables when the price of the printer itself is low.

The main competitors to this Canon maker are a few of HP’s low-cost Deskjet printers, like the Deskjet 2450, and the Epson Labor Force WF-2530WF from Epson. Print quality, especially on plain paper, is much better here than on the Epson, though there’s less to choose between the MG3550 and the Deskjet.

Print expenses are roughly comparable for black print between all three marques, though the Canon printer depends on 2p more affordable on colour pages. It also has a more solid, quality feel to its plastics.

Canon succeeds in providing an excellent series of all-in-ones with slowly increasing function sets, depending on asking price. Although the PIXMA MG3550 is at the bottom end of the scale, it does business as a printer, scanner and photo copier and includes cordless compatibility to print capably from phones, tablets and laptop computers, along with desktop devices.
